Each workplace has a different first aid requirement to the next, this requirement ranges from Emergency First Aid at Work (the Appointed Person) to fully qualified HSE First Aid at Work. The HSE have set guidelines which some people found difficult to understand. However, the HSE have now made the new guidelines easy to follow by using a Flow Chart method on the HSE website:

Guidance to First Aid Personnel Requirements Guidance issued by the Health and Safety Executive suggests the following number of personnel should be available at all times when people are at work:

Lower risk (eg offices, shops, libraries)

          • fewer than 25 - at least one appointed person

          • 25-50 - at least one first aider trained in HSE Emergency First Aid at Work

          • more than 50 - at least one first aider trained in HSE First Aid at Work for
            every 100 employed (or part thereof)

    Higher risk (eg light engineering and assembly work, food processing, warehousing, extensive work with dangerous machinery or sharp instruments, construction, chemical manufacture)

              • fewer than 5 - at least one appointed person

              • 5 - 50 - at least one first aider trained in HSE Emergency First Aid at Work or
                HSE First Aid at Work depending on the type of injuries that might occur

              • more than 50 - at least one first aider trained in HSE First Aid at Work for every 50
                employed (or part thereof)
