The Food Safety Act 1990 was introduced to ensure food supplied to members of the public is fit for human consumption.  It covers activities from primary production, through to distribution in the retail and catering industry.

The Food Safety Act works together with the General Food Regulations 2004 to provide penalties for those who breach the requirements of the Food Safety Act.

Environmental Health Officers were provided with enforcement powers in 2006 (Food Hygiene Regulations) to provide non complying businesses with penalties such as Hygiene Improvement Notices or Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notices. 

To meet this legislation, correct instruction, appropriate training and constant supervision is essential.
